Job Description:
- Spend 2-3 hours/week coaching/mentoring teams for the FLL Lego Challenge.
- Able to spend some personal time learning about the FLL competition rules, format, and Lego Robot designs/solutions.
- Compensation -$20-$30/hr for teaching time based on experience.
- Prior experience with Robotics or Coding competitions is a PLUS.
- Able to travel with teams for the qualifiers in Texas – HUGE PLUS.
- Willing to dedicate time to help kids succeed & Help the team set realistic goals.
- Relay all aspects of the FIRST LEGO League guidelines and rules to the team, Volunteers and parents
- Desire to work with children 9-13. Must be 20 years or older.
- Commits to stick with the teams until the end of the competition.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Mentorship: Guide and support students, fostering teamwork, critical thinking, and a positive, inclusive learning environment.
- Robotics & Programming:Teach and mentor students in designing, building, and programming robots using platforms like LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 or SPIKE Prime to complete missions.
- Project Development:Facilitate students’ research, development, and presentation of an Innovation Project tied to the FLL season’s theme, encouraging creative problem-solving.
- FLL Curriculum & Core Values:Ensure the team understands and embodies the FLL program’s rules, guidelines, and Core Values, including sportsmanship and collaboration.
- Competition Preparation:Help the team prepare for all aspects of the FLL competition, including the Robot Game, Project presentation, and Core Values judging.
- Practice Organization:Plan and run weekly practices, manage the team’s schedule, and ensure progress on all program elements.
- Communication:Maintain clear and open communication with students, parents, and program coordinators, providing regular updates on progress.
- Equipment & Logistics:Manage and maintain team equipment such as robot kits and mission mats, and coordinate logistics for meetings and competitions.
- Role Modeling:Serve as a positive adult role model, encouraging resilience, creativity, and a passion for STEAM.
Skills & Qualities
- Passion for STEM:An interest in or experience with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) is beneficial but not always required, as coaches can learn alongside students.
- Communication Skills:Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and program staff.
- Organizational Skills:Competence in managing schedules, organizing meetings, and coordinating resources.
- Patience & Encouragement:Willingness to guide, motivate, and support students through challenges.
- Adaptability:Ability to facilitate instruction and foster independent thought and problem-solving among team members
