Yarn's Branching Story Map

Plan a choose-your-path story on paper with at least two choices and three endings.

You need

  • Paper or sticky notes
  • A pencil
  • Arrows: lots of them

Steps

  1. Start scene

Write one sticky note: where are we, who is here, what is the problem?

  2. First choice

Add two arrows from it, each to a new note with a different choice.

  3. Branch again

Give at least one branch another choice.

  4. Endings

Write at least three endings. One can be a surprise.

  5. Test the paths

Have someone follow your arrows. Did every path make sense?

Build task

Finish line

A story map with at least 2 choice points and 3 endings that someone else can follow.

Finish line: Every arrow leads somewhere.

Check your understanding

1. A story with 2 choices that each split into 2 paths has how many endings at most?
2. What makes a branching story fair to the reader?
